![]() If you don’t have enough cash, do random missions to make enough money. When you gain a new level, upgrade all of your equipment for the category (weapons, electronics, etc) to the next level. Regardless of which ship upgrade you pick, the level of your guns, electronics, and equipment also increases. When you gain a level, you can upgrade an aspect of your ship and upgrade a power of your plasma cannon. Your ship gains levels as you acquire artifacts, up to level 20. The Big Bang missiles are somewhat useful against large targets (like cruisers) but even then, you can usually deal with the escorts and just park yourself behind the engine (where their turrets can't hit you) and camp out and destroy it. They cost money and take up a weapon slot and most of them aren’t that good. They will always be the same kind of weapon favored by the species that controls the system where it is dropped. They are quite a bit better than normal weapons of the same level and usually slightly worse than weapons of the next level up. Secret Service weapons are special weapons obtained at a few plot points and also are sometimes the reward for eliminating a pirate gang or liberating a system. Spore: Same rate of fire as lasers, but more damage.Given that most ships move very quickly, a higher rate of fire is usually more useful than infrequently heavy hits. Graviton: Large damage and high energy use, but very slow rate of fire.I didn’t find them as useful as Railguns. ![]() Does more damage against shields but less against hull. Ion Cannon: Same rate of fire as lasers.A little higher energy consumption, but that’s usually not a problem. Railguns: More damage and higher rate of fire than lasers.What I’m comparing everything else against. At the start of the game, the only weapons you get access to are lasers but when you reach the territory of other species, you get access to different weapons.
